Iridium CERTUS® Wins Top Connected Platform Solution Award at SATELLITE 2019

Iridium Certus has won the award for “Top Connected Platform” during the annual Mobile Satellite Users Association (MSUA) Mobility Satellite Innovation Awards at SATELLITE 2019. Iridium Certus is a unique platform that enables both the development and adoption of specialty broadband applications while serving as the world’s only truly global commercial broadband service. Currently, three Iridium Certus terminals are commercially available, including the Cobham SAILOR 4300, MissionLINK™ by Thales, the only land-mobile terminal available today, and VesseLINK™ by Thales, with aviation terminals making their debut in late 2019 and 2020. MVS assists the 2019 Philippines Election

In an incredible effort to keep the world communicated MVS will be assisting the 2019 Philippines Election this Monday, May 13th. We want to thank the Philippines government for trusting us once again this year with such an important national event.

Our MVS team lead by our CEO Deborah Deffaa along with Inmarsat and Smartmatic are already at Manila, Philippines running tests before Election Day. We will be providing 6500 BGAN terminals with the purpose of keeping cities (where regular internet access is not available) communicated at all times.

The BGAN terminals will transmit the votes for the location back to the Philippines Electoral Committee.

M2M Dubai: How technology is changing life in the emirate

Dubai is changing swiftly. With advanced new technologies, a constantly expanding oil industry, and a growing and complex economy, communication has become more important than ever. IoT/M2M offers a major avenue for innovation and economic growth, and has the potential to address many of region’s challenges. Through these technologies, businesses are able to stay connected, regardless of where they are.

In line with the Smart Dubai Plan 2021, the emirate would be ready for mass IoT adoption by 2020.

Getting connected with M2M Dubai 

Though Dubai still has an extremely robust oil and gas industry, diversification of the economy is incredibly important for long-term stability. Within the UAE, many are now looking to Dubai for ways to grow and expand without a reliance on the oil industry. Consequently, Dubai has been growing in areas of commerce, tourism, and more. These types of expansion absolutely demand the best available technologies, and it’s important for the groundwork for these technologies to be laid well in advance of expansion.

From oil fields to new construction projects, there are many areas of Dubai that are remote and still in development. Relying on traditional cellular signals isn’t feasible in these locations, as they don’t have coverage available. M2M can provide coverage to even the most remote of locations, ensuring the productivity and safety of these new developments. M2M includes communications technologies such as satellite phones, which rely on a broad network of satellites to deliver cellular data and internet data from anywhere in the world.

M2M for Dubai oil & gas

With lower oil prices being the new norm, enterprises in Dubai are adopting smarter, end-to-end M2M solutions for efficient operations, without jeopardizing their profit margins. This trend is bound to grow as the industry becomes even more competitive.  Oil corporations are already altering their drilling strategies after comparing real-time down-hole drilling data with data from production of nearby wells. The advanced analytics are effected by intelligent M2M tools. According to Bain & Company, this level of visibility can help companies improve production by 6% to 8%.

Thuraya M2M automates monitoring and data readings of compressors, tank liquids, LACT (Lease Automatic Custody Transfer) meters, PIGs (Pipeline Inspection Gauges) as well as rectifiers deployed for cathodic protection.

M2M and cold chain telematics in Dubai

It is estimated that nearly 3.27 million tons of food, worth more than US $3.54 billion produced and imported in the UAE is wasted every year. The vast majority of food wastage happens before it even reaches the consumer.  In the past, there was very little consistent cold chain integrity. The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming the efficiency of long distance food, pharmaceutical, and other perishable supply chains in the region.

According to recent studies, between 20 – 30% of the trucks and delivery wagons supplying food stuff in the UAE need to be equipped with the telematics technology as real-time information is key to managing F&B fleets efficiently. Rather than merely consisting of freezers and freight trains, the newer, temperature-controlled, ‘cold’ supply chain is now increasingly incorporating digital software solutions, secure cloud technology, and open architecture. 

In areas outside regular telecom networks, Thuraya’s IoT/M2M technologies are the prime enablers of efficient cold chain supply and management.  

Civil defense and M2M technology

When it comes to civil defense, the government and the public need to be connected. Yet as people continue to spread out to remote areas this can be difficult. If the telecommunications lines are down, it can potentially endanger important emergency communications. The political landscape is changing as quickly as the economic one, and many countries are now facing new challenges related to securing their cities and their borders. From external attacks to environmental disasters, it’s important for civil defense that every country be able to swiftly mobilize and alert its citizens.

Virgin Atlantic boosts passenger experience with Inmarsat’s GX Aviation

Inmarsat’s award-winning GX Aviation inflight broadband solution will be available to passengers onboard Virgin Atlantic’s brand new Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic is scheduled to receive 12 Airbus A350-1000s over the next three years, with GX Aviation pre-installed upon delivery. The service will be available once the first of these aircraft takes to the skies from late summer 2019, allowing passengers to seamlessly browse the internet, check social media, instant message and more during flights, with connection speeds on par with mobile broadband on the ground.

GX Aviation is the world’s first and only global, high-speed inflight connectivity service delivered through a wholly-owned and operated network of high-throughput satellites. It was revealed as part of Virgin Atlantic’s new onboard offering on the A350-1000 earlier this week, with other key features of the aircraft including an entirely new Upper Class cabin with brand new suite and social space.

More than 1,600 aircraft are currently expected under signed contracts for Inmarsat’s next-generation inflight broadband solutions for airlines, with a new business pipeline of approximately 3,000 aircraft worldwide. A fifth GX satellite will be launched later this year and two sixth-generation satellites are scheduled to launch in 2020 and 2021. The previous iteration of the GMSS contract was awarded in October of 2013 for a five-year term with a six-month extension option. The subscribers operating under the Iridium EMSS program run by DISA have more than doubled over the five-year period between 2013 and 2018 to 113,000, reflecting a 17.25% compounded annual growth rate. This surge in growth has occurred under the current flat-rate contract program that provides unlimited voice and data services to the U.S. warfighter and other government participants.

The development of Iridium Certus 700 capability will allow Certus terminals to receive data from the satellites at speeds of up to 704 Kbps which is progressing very well and at this time we expect Beta trials to start in Q3-2019 and commercial availability is scheduled for December 2019. As a reminder, this enhanced downlink capability will be available to all existing Certus terminals once a free-of-charge Firmware upgrade is carried out on the terminals. This new capability will make all Certus terminals the fastest L-Band devices in the market.
